LoRissia Autery, a Midfield native, graduated from the Howard University College of Medicine in Washington D.C. and completed her residency at Tulane University in New Orleans.
“We are pleased that Dr. Autery has joined the medical staff of Walker Baptist. She brings enhanced obstetric and gynecology treatment options that will add to the quality of patient care available in our area,” WBMC administrator Bob Phillips said.
Autery said that she felt at home in the Baptist Health System family from her first interview.
“I compare it to courting in a relationship. Sometimes you click with somebody on the first date. It was the same thing,” Autery said.
Autery said she was drawn to medicine at an early age and explored various aspects of the field before settling on obstetrics and gynecology.
Some of her most memorable experiences as a physician so far came while she was working in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina had devastated the city.
The hospital’s 10 delivery rooms were frequently filled while other women labored in the waiting area.
One night, Autery was making her rounds when an expectant father opened one of the doors and said he could see his child’s head.
Autery said she mastered the quick one-handed delivery.
“Because of those years, very few things surprise me. Even if it’s something crazy, I can usually remember when something similar happened,” Autery said.
Autery is now seeing patients in the Medical Arts Tower at WBMC.
She said she is excited to be part of the Brunner Obstetrics and Gynecology practice.
“It’s all about what we are doing for the patients,” Autery said.
