People in Walker County who would like to purchase a storm shelter, but need financial assistance, can apply to receive aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Johnny Burnette, the director of the Walker County Emergency Management Agency, said that grants for storm shelters start at $725.25 and increase to a maximum of $4,000.

The deadline to apply for the grant from FEMA is Friday. Those interested in applying for aid can call the Walker County EMA at (205) 384-7233.

Burnette said that the funds help people to purchase a storm shelter, making residents feel more secure.

“It (a storm shelter) provides safety during tornadic weather, knowing they have a closer place to run for safety,” Burnette said.
