The Walker County Solid Waste Department and the Jasper Sanitation Department reported they will be closed Monday to allow their workers to observe the holiday. Those closings will push back pickup by one day.
Larry Hathcoat, supervisor at the Walker County Landfill, said the landfill was closed Saturday and will be closed Monday. He said garbage pickup would be a day late with his employees running two routes on Friday.
“We run five days per week on a normal week, so taking a day off makes us have to double up one day,” he said.
Hathcoat said Friday is the best day to run the double route because pickup is done in south Walker County on Thursdays and Fridays.
“We just move pickup back a day and that puts Thursday and Friday together,” he said. “It’s all south Walker on those days. It’s pretty tough, but we’ll have a full crew in here and get it done.”
Jasper garbage pickup for residential customers typically runs Monday through Thursday, but this week it will run Tuesday through Friday.
The Labor Day holiday also forced the cancellation of Monday’s meeting of the Walker County Commission.
The meeting has been rescheduled for Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Commission’s meeting chambers inside the Walker County Courthouse in downtown Jasper. Items on the agenda for Tuesday’s meeting that commissioners will consider approving include a $13,125 budget amendment for election equipment and an agreement for entitlement transfers with the Federal Aviation Administration.
The Kiwanis Club of Jasper has also canceled its meeting for Monday due to Labor Day. The group will meet again Monday, Sept. 12 at noon inside the cafeteria on the Jasper campus of Bevill State Community College.
