The game could not have started any worse for Cordova (3-1 overall, 3-0 in region play) as the Blue Devils fumbled at their own 36-yard line on their opening possession of the game.
Winfield promptly took the ball 36 yards in five plays as Stacey Nails went in from three yards out. Marcos Garcia added the PAT to put Winfield on the board first 7-0.
Cordova’s offense looked anything but good early as the Blue Devils could muster very little against a stubborn Pirate defensive front, resulting in two fumbles and a punt to begin the game.
On Cordova’s fourth possession of the game however, things changed as Taurus White entered the game, got his first carry and exploded 70 yards around left end for a touchdown. White also added the two-point conversion as Cordova went ahead 8-7. Winfield was unable to do anything offensively the rest of the half as the Blue Devil defense shut them down with three consecutive three and outs. Cordova’s offense sputtered again after its lone score as quarterback Bryant Thomas was intercepted twice, once in the end zone to thwart potential scoring drives, as the half ended with Cordova leading 8-7.
The second half started exactly as the game did for Winfield, as the Pirates took over at Cordova’s 47-yard line and marched down the field in five plays to reclaim the lead as Hagen Stovall connected with Mason Osborn for a 22-yard strike. Garcia again was good and Winfield led 14-8.
On Cordova’s first possession of the second half, Nathan Humphries and the Devil offense got busy as they marched 75 yards in seven plays to answer the Pirate score with Humphries rumbling 35 yards to pay dirt. Lane Sickles added the two-point conversion for a 16-14 lead.
On Cordova’s next possession, White, who ended the night with 168 yards rushing, again found a hole in the defense and raced 53 yards to the end zone for another score. The two-point conversion was good and Cordova led 24-14.
On Cordova’s first possession of the fourth quarter, Humphries, who carried the ball five times for 102 yards, scored his second touchdown of the game, this time from 55 yards out as the Blue Devils put the game out of reach. The two-point conversion pass from Thomas to Humphries pushed the score to 32-14 in favor of Cordova.
The Cordova defense, led by Andrew Minor and Bradley Cordell forced a Winfield fumble on their next possession and the Blue Devils took over on the plus side of the field. It took only five plays for White to record his third score of the game, this time from 27 yards away. The PAT failed, giving Cordova a 38-14 edge.
Winfield (2-2, 1-2), got a consolation score late, as reserve quarterback Nathan Dean scored from one-yard out on a quarterback sneak. The conversion failed, and the final tally read Cordova 38, Winfield 20.
Next Friday the Blue Devils entertain county rival Parrish in a non-region game.
