Local law enforcement on Wednesday arrested a Cordova man on charges of burglary, assault and multiple counts of kidnapping.

Walker County Sheriff Investigator Ralph Williams said accounts from the victims and witnesses of the crime indicate 53-year-old Steven Anthony Parnell kidnapped at knife-point a 36-year-old woman along with her 77-year-old grandmother and 12-year-old son.

According to Williams, the three victims lived next door to Parnell’s home off Scott Road in Cordova.

Williams said Parnell forced the woman to drive him to a local doctor’s office where he planned to get a prescription for pain medication.

According to a release from the Sheriff’s Office, the victim drove Parnell to a clinic at the 4300 block of Highway 78 East. When they arrived at the office, the victims fled from the car and ran into the building.

Williams said Parnell forced his way into the office and then assaulted the 36-year-old victim and a nurse, who had come from an adjacent office to help.

Williams said a passing motorist, Tony Williams of Nauvoo, stopped and subdued Parnell until Jasper Police officers arrived on the scene.

Sheriff’s deputies Mark Bell and Kevin Williams then took custody of Parnell and transported him to the Walker County Jail.

Williams said the Sheriff’s investigators will remain in contact with Walker County District Attorney Bill Adair’s office about the incident, which remains under investigation.
