The Lady Yellow Jackets picked up the Class 5A, Area 13 tournament title with a four-game win over Walker at Curry High School.
No. 4 Curry cruised past Mortimer Jordan in the opener before beating Walker 25-16, 25-11, 16-25, 25-7.
Both teams advance to Saturday’s regional tournament at Lee-Huntsville. The top two teams from the regional move on to the sub-state round of the playoffs. Sub-state winners earn a spot in the Elite Eight State Tournament in Pelham.
“I think we did pretty good overall,” first-year Curry coach Whitney Todd said. “We had a stretch in the Walker game where we didn’t play well, but we pulled it out.”
Curry (44-7) was led by tournament MVP Kryssi Daniels who had 44 kills on the day. Nikki Brooks, Alex Allred and Payton Norris each made the All-Tournament team. Walker’s Pollyann Scruggs and Hannah Sparkman also made the squad.
Against Walker, Daniels had 19 kills, 18 digs, four aces and four blocks. Chloe Bennett and Brooks each had nine kills, Allred had 39 assists, Bretta Lane added five kills, Norris had 11 digs, Carlee Richardson added five digs and Alayna Jordan had five blocks.
Scruggs led the Lady Vikings (26-22) with three blocks and 12 assists. Sparkman had 10 kills, Catie Elliott added six kills and two blocks, Ashley Kamplain had nine assists and three aces, Sidney Cooper had four kills and four digs and Miranda Bruce added five kills.
Curry opened the day with a sweep of Mortimer Jordan. Daniels had 25 kills, four digs, Jordan had eight kills, Brooks had five kills and Allred had 28 assists and three aces.
Next up for Curry is Muscle Shoals, the 5A, Area 16 runner up.
“We aren’t just looking at the regional. We’re trying to go all the way,” Todd said. “If we can just stay motivated and not get frustrated, we will be OK. We’ve been trying to prepare for the playoffs by going through all these tournaments. Hopefully, we’ll be used to the pressure when we get there.”
On Tuesday, Walker opened with a 25-12, 26-28, 25-8, 25-7 win over Mortimer Jordan.
Scruggs had five kills, 15 assists and four aces, Sparkman had 20 kills and four blocks and Elliott added three kills and four blocks while Karina Santana had three aces and served 11 straight points.
Kamplain had 17 assists and three serving aces, Jessica Woodley had five assists and two digs, and Cooper had seven kills, two aces and three digs. Bruce had six kills and two digs.
Walker will face Lawrence County (37-24) at the regional on Saturday.
Curry won the Cullman Tournament over the weekend, beating Plainview in the championship match 23-25, 25-21, 15-9.
The Lady Jackets went 5-1 in the tournament, losing to Plainview in the opener (20-25, 25-17, 16-14) before beating: Good Hope (25-19, 25-21), Cullman (25-17-25-21), Madison Academy (25-19, 25-19) and West Morgan (25-17, 25-10).
