Gertrude Coggins Poe, 87, of Powell, Tenn., formerly of Cordova, left this life Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, surrounded by her loving family, friends and church family, at Brakebill Nursing Facility in Knoxville, Tenn. She was a member of Northside Church of Christ in Powell, Tenn. Gertrude was born April 13, 1924, to James and Mary Coggins, the 13th child, born on the 13th. She supported the World War II effort operating an overhead crane in Seattle, Wash., building B-52’s. She worked in the textile industry, was a USDA poultry inspector and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. But most of all, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend with a profound faith in God. No one was ever turned from her door without a helping hand.

She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Gravitt; grandson and wife, David and Shelia Mann; great-grandchildren, English and Benjamin Mann, all of Powell, Tenn.; daughter by choice, Elizabeth Diane Martin of Jasper; sisters-in-law, Sue Poe of Jasper, and Eulata Wade of Cordova, and lifelong friend, Evelyn Wilson of Jasper. Also surviving are beloved nieces and nephews, J.C. and Patty Poe of Jasper, Doug Poe of Montgomery, Steve Heathcock of Jasper, Elaine Calvert of West Palm Beach, Fla., Helen Tubbs of Jasper, Patsy Gragg of Mulga and Sarah Coggins of Jasper, friends, Betty Earley of Jasper and Juanita Posey of Jasper, and many other relatives and friends, and her loving and supportive church family of Powell, Tenn.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband, Deward Poe; parents, James and Mary Coggins; sisters, Launa Hunter, Christina Romine, and Gladys Pearson; brothers, R.B., Thermon, James, Damon, Tilton, Dewey, Willie, Walter and Earnest Coggins; and her beloved brother-in-law, Curtis Poe, with whom she shared a mutual love and respect.

The family wishes to express their thanks to the entire staff of Brakebill Nursing Facility for the loving care provided to their mother during her stay.

Visitation will be Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, from 10 a.m. to noon, at Kilgore-Green Funeral Home, followed by funeral services at noon in the Kilgore-Green Chapel. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Jasper. Craig Lindsey and Kenneth Pounds will officiate.

Pallbearers will be J.C. Poe, Doug Poe, Steve Heathcock, Dual Tubbs, Justin Rigsby and Joseph Rigsby.

Hononary pallbearers will be A.C. Mann, Larry Adams, Kenneth Pounds, Bodie Cordell, J.R. Baughn, and men of Northside Church of Christ.
