Due to the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, garbage pickup for Walker County and the City of Jasper will be modified for the next couple of weeks.

Pickups for Walker County will take place today.

Larry Hathcoat, the county’s landfill supervisor, said his crew can’t take a Friday off.

“We just can’t take Friday off,” he said. “We have too big of an area to cover, so we will have to pickup.”

For the county, garbage pickup will not take place on Monday or next Monday, Jan. 3.

“We will not pick up those days and push everyone back a day,” Hathcoat said. “If your garbage is normally picked up on Monday, it will be picked up on Tuesday. On Friday, we will run a double route to get Thursday and Friday’s pickups done.”

Hathcoat said holidays can be tough for solid waste workers.

“The week of holidays is pretty intense around here,” he said. “The guys work really hard to be able to have some holiday time off with their families.”

The Walker County Landfill will be closed today through Monday as well as Saturday, Dec. 31 through Monday, Jan. 2, Hathcoat said.

Jasper’s landfill and office will be closed today, and Monday, as well as Friday, Dec. 30, and Monday, Jan. 2. Garbage pickup in Jasper will be delayed by one day each of the next two weeks.
