Approximately 33,000 Alabamians lost a combined 143,309 pounds last year during the weight lost contest.
Area residents contributed 639 pounds to that total.
Participants work in teams for 10 weeks to lose at least 10 pounds per person. The ones who achieve their goal become eligible to win several grand prizes.
Those who commit to a healthier lifestyle continue reaping benefits long after the competition is over.
“Many people have used Scale Back Alabama as a catalyst for a life change,” said Renae McKinney, community relations director for Walker Baptist Medical Center.
McKinney said one local woman lost more than 100 pounds in the year between her initial weigh-in and her return to the competition the following January.
Legal Losers: Tipping the Scales of Justice from Warren and Associates was the top team last year with 100 pounds lost between the four members.
Co-workers Treesa Collins and Leesa Warren said the crew ate lunch together, worked out at the law office’s gym together and weighed together at WBMC every week, which is not a requirement of the program.
“It gave us something to look forward to and kept us motivated because we weighed in front of each other,” Warren said.
WBMC will again serve as a weigh-in site for the sixth year of Scale Back Alabama, which begins the week of Jan. 21-27 and wraps up April 7-13.
Weigh-in sessions will be held in the HeartAware room just off WBMC’s main lobby on Jan. 22 from noon to 3 p.m.; Jan. 23 from 7 to 9 a.m.; Jan. 25 from 7 to 9 a.m. and Jan. 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Participants must be at least 18 years old, live or work in Alabama and cannot have had weight-loss surgery within the past year.
Teams must consist of at least four people and maintain all four original members in order to be eligible for the grand prize drawings.
The first team drawn during an ending event on April 30 will win $1,000 each. The second team drawn will win $500 per team member and the third team drawn will win $250 per team member.
All individuals who lose at least 10 pounds will be included in a drawing for one of 50 achievement prizes of $100 per person, regardless of their team’s achievement.
In addition, there will be a separate drawing for all individuals who have lost any weight and weigh out.
Scale Back Alabama is a joint effort of Alabama's hospitals, the Alabama Department of Public Health and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama.
