Although a picture is worth a thousand words, flowers that really make a statement are now available in Walker County.

Carolyn Faye Jones, owner of Elegant Events in Carbon Hill, recently became a licensee of Speaking Roses.

The company’s embossed flowers have been seen at red carpet events and in the hands of such celebrities as Tom Cruise, who presented 225 of them to a group of single mothers on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in 2006.

Jones said she is one of only three Speaking Roses licensees in Alabama.

“It’s so different that people around here have never seen it,” she said.

Jones opened her own wedding and event planning business in 2005. She decided to add flower embossing to her list of services after several florists closed down in her neighborhood.

Jones said she learned about Speaking Roses more than five years ago but couldn’t afford the necessary equipment at the time.

Now she is confident that enough clients will be interested in the service to bring a good return on her investment.

“They make great favors for brides because we can put a wedding date and the couple’s name or picture on them,” Jones said.

Speaking Roses can also be ordered for other events such as proms, anniversaries, corporate parties and funerals.

The embossing can be done in a variety of colors and on either real or silk flowers. The cost is $12 for a single flower in a vase or $70 per dozen.

There is a $5 additional charge for custom phrases or photos.

Jones said she expects that most orders could be filled within a day’s notice.
