He graduated from Parrish High School, and served in the U.S. Navy. After being discharged, he had a very successful representative business, stocking and distribution in Huntsville for many years, until he retired and moved to Hobie Sound, Fla. Then he moved his family to Rogersville for the final six years of his life.
A private memorial service will be held in Rogersville at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012.
He was preceded in death by his wife and sweetheart, Shirley Blackwell. After being together for 57 years in marriage, Shirley passed away on Feb. 5, 2011. Billy Joe Blackwell passed away on the same date one year later. He was also preceded in death by his son, Ronney Blackwell; daughter, Debbie Blackwell; parent, James Hardy Blackwell; mother, Effie May Blackwell; grandparents, P.P. and Mattie Lou Blackwell and Judge and Mattie E. Meadows; sisters, Vera B. Smith (Charles) and Thelma M. Minion (Bill); and brothers, Preston P. Blackwell (Millie), James Hollis Blackwell (Ann) and Gus Chilton Blackwell (Mildred).
He is survived by his daughters, Linda Zaskey (Denny) of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., Phyllis Blackwell and Leah Gillespie; two grandsons, Taylor and Tanner Zaskey; sisters, Kathryn A. Blackwell of Covington, La., and Betty Taylor (Luke) of Parrish; and brother, J.W. (Jim) Blackwell (Mary) of Parrish; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
