“All of you have contributed to our school in many different ways,” Pilling said. “This lunch was a very small way we could thank you for all that you have done.”
Pilling said volunteers from the community, who do everything from listening to students read to packing take-home food for the weekends, are vital to the success of West Jasper Elementary.
“It does take a whole village to raise a child and to try to do it successfully,” she said. “West Jasper is a wonderful place, and we wanted to recognize some of the people who have helped us and tell you how much we appreciate all you do for our school.”
Jerry Boyd, pastor of Maranatha Baptist Church in west Jasper, said he is proud to do his part in helping the school.
“This is a great school,” he said. “They have wonderful teachers and a wonderful principal. They love their students here at West Jasper.”
Jasper Mayor Sonny Posey said the school does a fantastic job educating area children and doesn’t always gets the recognition that it deserves.
“West Jasper Elementary School is a hidden gem in our city,” he said. “A lot of people don’t know how great this school is and how outstanding the teachers and faculty are. We appreciate the work they put in for the children of our city and this community.”
During the event, members of school’s fifth grade choral group performed for the guests as they ate a meal prepared in the school’s cafeteria. Community members were also offered a tour of the school.
