Walker County Republican Women will be hosting a large yard sale on Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the old Bargain Town building.

Member DeLiska Lee said proceeds will be used to help buy the dictionaries that the group gives to each second-grader in the Jasper City School System and each third-grader in the Walker County School System.

The project is in its 12th year and as popular as ever, according to Lee.

Lee said teachers have told the group that the day dictionaries arrive feels like Christmas because the students are so excited.

“When we started, the illiteracy rate was high in Walker County. We hope we’ve had a small hand in reducing that,” Lee said.
