Walker County authorities are investigating the shooting death of an Ohatchee man Tuesday evening.

Walker County Coroner J.C. Poe said Robert Paul Barber, 23, died at UAB Hospital’s emergency room after he had suffered a gunshot wound to the upper part of his left leg.

Barber was found in his vehicle on Bryan Road just outside Sumiton around 5 p.m. by members of the Sumiton Police Department, Sumiton Fire and Rescue, Regional Paramedical Services and deputies from the Walker County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff John Mark Tirey said Barber had called and requested an ambulance to the location, which was near the entrance to Pineview Landfill.

“We are currently investigating the incident,” Tirey said. “It could be self-inflicted or an accident, but we’re not ruling anything out.”

Tirey said police have determined Barber borrowed a gun and bullets from a friend a short time before he was shot.

Poe said Barber’s body was sent to the the Alabama Department of Forensics Sciences in Huntsville for an autopsy. He said a preliminary autopsy report could be available as early as today.
