Though the Devil Dawgs fell to the Huntsville Rockets 30-13 on April 14, Saturday’s win earned a series sweep over the Cobras — and more importantly — helped earn West Jefferson a championship berth.
“The loss to the Rockets hurt everybody on the team — we knew we could play better than we did against them and we set out to prove that against the Cobras. Our guys couldn’t have responded any better,” Devil Dawgs owner/starting center Jesse Reed said.
“Everyone was really keyed up to get on the field immediately and move on. For us to come out and perform against Bessemer — who was 5-2 coming into the game — says a great deal about how ready we were to return to our top form.”
Dora’s Brennen Nash had an outstanding game, grabbing two Cobra interceptions to set the tone for the Devil Dawgs’ defensive play.
“You could tell Brennen was ready — he was playing like a leader and we couldn’t be more impressed with what he accomplished,” Reed said.
West Jefferson (7-1-1) will battle the Bessemer Wolf Pack on Saturday, May 12 at West Jefferson High School.
Admission is $6 per person, will children 12 and under admitted for free.
The Devil Dawgs and the Wolfpack went to a 14-14 tie in the regular season meeting on March 17.
Reed said that hosting the championship game serves a season-long goal for the Devil Dawgs.
“This is what we’ve been fighting for all year long. It was the first step in the ultimate accomplishment of winning the ASFL title,” Reed said.
