Jailers let Hendrix out of his cell to use the phone and he escaped through the fire bay, according to police department Investigator Matt Dozier. Officers pursued Hendrix but eventually lost him in the woods on the south side of Highway 118.
Dozier said that Hendrix has an extensive criminal past, but the department does not consider him a danger to the public.
“We are currently using different resources to try to bring him back into custody,” Dozier said.
Anyone with information regarding Hendrix’s whereabouts is asked to call Carbon Hill Police at 924-4411.
Letting inmates out of their cells has been a safety concern for Police Chief Heath Allred, leading him to ask the council to a approve a system to put phones in each cell at the jail.
The council approved the measure and the installation is in progress, but this escape underscores the reason for the system.
“This is exactly why we needed this system,” Mayor Chris Hart said. “The inmates can use the phones and it doesn’t put anyone in danger.”
Similar phone systems are already installed in Parrish. The phone system generates revenue for the city and can be shut off by jail officials whenever needed.
