An Oakman man was killed late Friday night after he was ejected from his vehicle after an accident on Interstate-22 in Jasper.

Billy Ray Linard, 48, was pronounced dead on the scene early Saturday morning by Walker County Coroner J.C. Poe.

Poe said the accident happened just before midnight on Friday when the vehicle Linard was driving went into the median near Exit 61 on I-22. Poe said the vehicle hit a guard rail and Linard was ejected near the half-mile exit sign.

Members of the Alabama State Troopers investigated the crash.

The accident was the only fatal crash of the Memorial Day weekend, Poe said.

Poe said a stronger police presence throughout the holiday weekend may have helped to prevent more accidents.

“The ‘Click It or Ticket’ program has slowed drivers down,” Poe said. “Knowing that there is more patrol officers out there makes people think about their driving habits a little more.”
