Two summer camps will start on Monday in Jasper, and spots are still available for both.

Girls Incorporated of Central Alabama will hold a camp for Walker County children at the Percy Goode Community Center, often called the Frisco Gym.

The program will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays until July 20 (It will be closed July 2-6).

Girls Inc. is a national nonprofit with a network of more than 3,000 sites in more than 300 cities. According to the group’s website, the group is “dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold.”

The organization started in 1864 to help young women who had migrated from rural communities to work in textile mills and factories.

The six-week summer camp for Walker County children will involve arts and crafts, swimming and gymnastics as well as classes on finances, cooking and health.

“They love it,” said arts and craft/cooking instructor Glenda Ward. “They really look forward to it, and it’s just a good experience for them.”

The fee for the Girls Inc. camp is $225. Those interested in registering can sign up at the community center on Monday, or contact Christye Medlock at 205-370-5065 or Angela Eakins at 205-599-5545 or aeakins@girlsinccentral-al.org.

The Jasper City Schools will also host a summer camp at West Jasper Elementary School starting Monday.

The program, entitled “Summer Camp with an Impact x2,” will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, June 4, to June 29 and from July 9-13.

The camp is for Jasper City School students enrolled in kindergarten through eighth grade during the Fall of 2011.

Summer Camp with an Impact will include academics in the morning and fun activities like bowling or swimming. The afternoon sessions will also include trips to places like the Golden Flake Factory, the Heart of Dixie Train Ride and a Birmingham Baron’s baseball game.

A hot lunch and an afternoon snack will be served daily.

The fee for Summer Camp with an Impact is $100 per week ($175 for an additional sibling and $250 for two additional siblings).
