Churches across Walker County will be holding vacation bible schools in the coming weeks. Several of those kicked off Monday, including Amazing Wonders Aviation VBS at Jasper’s First Baptist Church.

Earnie Burfitt, JFBC associate pastor, said a total of 227 people attended Monday’s opening day.

“That is slightly ahead of last year’s first day, and that’s in spite of the heavy rain this morning,” Burfitt said.

The Amazing Wonders theme is based on Psalm 147:5, which speaks of God’s greatness. Burfitt said the VBS will also teach children about several natural wonders, including the Matterhorn, the Northern Lights and the Grand Canyon. Jasper’s First Baptist’s VBS is designed for 4-year-olds through children entering the sixth grade.

The bible school takes place through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon each day.

“We have kids from all over the area here today,” JFBC Senior Pastor Dennis Culbreth said. “There are kids here from many different churches and there are kids here who don’t go to church. We just want to invite everyone throughout the community to bring their children.”
