Students from Equines Assisting Special Individuals will be performing with real cowboys and cowgirls this weekend during the fifth annual EASI Rodeo.

Riders from EASI will be participating in a short demonstration each night of the rodeo, which will be held Friday and Saturday at Jasper Jaycees Fairgrounds.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the local therapeutic riding program.

“It has grown every year that we’ve had it, and I hope this year is going to be our best,” said organizer and EASI board member Carla Lightsey.

Lightsey added that in prevoius years, the rodeo has raised between $10,000 and $18,000 for EASI.

Her goal for this year is $20,000.

Although the money is currently used to cover the program’s operating expenses, Lightsey said she would like to eventually be able to purchase a portable arena with some of the funds.

“That way you don’t have to cancel classes because of rainy weather,” she said.

The cost to attend the rodeo is a $10 donation. Children 5 and under get in free.

Gates open at 6 p.m. EASI’s demonstration is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The rodeo starts at 8 p.m.

Sanctioned events include bareback riding, calf roping, team roping, barrel racing, breakaway roping and bull riding.

The specialty act will be Kristy Harris, a trick rider from Montgomery.
