Firefighters with the Saragossa, Nauvoo and Mt. Zion volunteer fire departments responded to the scene of a structure fire early Monday morning in the Lupton community and discovered a woman’s body inside the residence.

Firefighters notified investigators with the Alabama Fire Marshal’s Office and the Walker County Sheriff’s Office after the discovery.

Sgt. Tim Thomas, a criminal investigator with the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, said the body of Kimberly Steele Williams, 37, of Nauvoo was found inside her home on Prospect Road around 9 a.m. Monday.

“Firefighters got the call around 8:37 and when they arrived on the scene and entered the residence, they discovered the victim’s body a few minutes later,” Thomas said. “They (firefighters) immediately contacted the Sheriff’s Office, and we are currently working the case in conjunction with investigators from the State of Alabama Fire Marshal’s Office.”

Thomas said Williams’ body has been sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science in an effort to determine the exact cause of death.

“That’s routine anytime we have an unattended death like this,” Thomas said. “The exact cause of the fire is also still under investigation.”
