Blevins was last seen by his family on Dec. 7, 1994, when he went to one of his favorite hangouts, the Allstate Cafe, near the Walker County/Jefferson County line.
The family searched all of Blevins’ favorite spots and the Allstate Cafe where he was last seen. Finding no leads, they filed a missing person report with Sumiton PD.
Sumiton police entered Blevins’ information into a national database for missing people. Over the years, Sumiton Police have followed a number of leads and conducted extensive searches that never revealed what happened to Blevins.
In 2001, a Florida medical examiner contacted Sumiton saying that they believed skeletal remains found in West Palm Beach, Fla. in 1999 were Blevins. The family and police were confused how Blevins would have gotten to Florida.
Then, according to current Sumiton Police Chief T.J. Burnett, further testing proved that the Florida remains were not a DNA match to Blevins. After that, the original investigator in the case moved on to another department and later died. With no other leads, the case eventually went cold.
Although new leads have been few and far between, Burnett and Sumiton PD still hope to be able to bring closure to the Blevins family, who have more questions than answers.
“We are still pursuing the case of missing person Larry Blevins,” Burnett said Tuesday. He added that he had been in touch with the family and was hopeful that the case could still be solved.
