Alabama State Troopers are investigating a fatal accident that took the life of a Carbon Hill woman Saturday evening near Fayette County.

Norma Smith, 41, died at UAB Hospital at 2:30 a.m. Sunday, according to Walker County Coroner J.C. Poe. Smith’s death was the result of injuries she suffered in a one vehicle accident Saturday around 6 p.m. on Fish Hatchery Road in Walker County, just before the Fayette County line.

Poe said Smith is believed to have been the passenger in the vehicle. A male whose name was not available at press time was driving the vehicle. Poe said the driver suffered minor injuries and had been treated and released.

Poe said the vehicle had left the roadway and rolled over before coming to rest back in the road. Smith was ejected from the vehicle during the accident, and Poe said neither person in the car was wearing seat belts.

According to Poe, troopers are investigating the accident as a traffic homicide because alcohol may have been a causing factor in the crash.
