Police Chief Kenneth Bobo said the accident occured around 2 a.m. when the man lost control of his SUV, slamming into a power pole, chain link fence and the front of the house.
Parts of downtown were without power for several hours, and one corner of the house received significant damage because of the incident.
The driver was transported by ambulance to a nearby ballfield, where he was loaded into a helicopter and flown to UAB Hospital.
Bobo said that the man was listed in critical condition in the latest update he had received on Saturday.
No other vehicles or passengers were involved in the accident. Bobo, who was not at the scene, said he was not aware if anyone was in the house at the time.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
“Right now, it looks like speed was a factor,” Bobo said.
