For many years, Stafford worked as a problem solver for chain restaurants. He would be asked to go into struggling spots and turn them around. He’s hoping to do the same thing at Reese’s Drive-In in Jasper.
“This place has such a great history. That was the appeal that Reese’s had for me,” Stafford said.
The restaurant, which has been open in Jasper for more than 60 years, was a popular hangout for area residents in years gone by. Stafford said he hopes to capitalize on that nostalgia.
“This was the place to be in Jasper at one point many years ago,” he said. “There are a lot of folks in this town who met their spouses at Reese’s Drive-In. I want a new generation of people to be able to say that.”
Since food is the selling point of any restaurant, Stafford said he has tried to focus on the things that have made Reese’s a popular eatery for years. He said steak sandwiches and burgers have always been popular at the restaurant, and it’s most famous for its fried chicken.
“We’re trying to get the fried chicken back to how it was made when the restaurant first opened,” Stafford said. “We are going to be bringing the flour for our batter in from Canada. A lot of people also comment on our burgers. I think they are the best burgers in town.”
Stafford has owned the restaurant since April, and he said he’s been pleased with the amount of customers so far.
“I thought it would take us a while to build up our customer base, but we’ve done well,” he said. “We have a lot of loyal customers already. We’re still working to perfect things, but we are well on our way to becoming the restaurant that I think we can become.”
