Jasper Fire Captain Alan Clark, the city’s fire marshal, said the ban is lifted but residents and business owners are being asked to contact the Jasper Fire Department before burning.
“We want to continue to urge people to be cautious,” Clark said. “We are asking them to call and get verbal permission to burn so we will know when and where burning is taking place so we can be ready if the fire gets out of control.”
Mayor Sonny Posey said the amount of rainfall in Jasper in recent days has led to the ban being lifted.
“We’ve had an adequate amount of rainfall, and that is why we are lifting the total ban, but we’re still limiting burning to people who call to get permission,” Posey said.
Posey and Clark said several businesses had called requesting to burn boxes or different items.
“They’ve gotten a little behind on clearing out some of those things,” Posey said. “This will give them a chance to catch up.”
Clark said Jasper Fire will handle the burning requests on a case-by-case basis.
“We will try to accomodate everyone we can,” he said.
For permission to burn, contact the Jasper Fire Department at 205-221-3434.
