A Midfield man was taken into custody Monday afternoon after leading law enforcement officers from the Walker County Sheriff’s Office on car and foot chases through the Yerkwood community.

Walker County Sheriff John Mark Tirey said Joel Jones Jr., 27, was arrested around 1 p.m. Monday after he fled from sheriff’s patrol deputies who attempted to stop his vehicle on a routine traffic stop near the intersection of I-22 and Sharon Boulevard.

“The deputies did a real good job in apprehending this individual and taking him off the street before he could hurt anybody,” Tirey said. “And this arrest may have also helped to stem the flow of some of the drugs that have been coming into our county.”

Walker County Sheriff’s Investigator Sgt. Darrell Mote said the car chase went down Sharon Boulevard toward the Yerkwood community, then took a right on Smoot Street, a left onto Church Street and then a right onto Vera Parker Street before ending when the suspect’s vehicle crashed into the woods at the dead end of Vera Parker Street.

Jones jumped from the vehicle and fled on foot into the woods but was apprehended a few minutes later, Mote said.

“Several of our officers responded to the scene to assist the two deputies,” he said. “They had the suspect already in custody by the time the others arrived.”

Mote added that the suspect reportedly tossed something from the vehicle during the chase, but at press time authorities were still trying to determine what the object was and where it landed.

Jones is currently being held in the Walker County Jail. He has been charged with conspiracy to commit a controlled substance crime, reckless endangerment and attempting to elude.
