Arroyo (5-1) gave up six hits, with no walks and struck out five batters in eight and one-third innings for the win. Dan Remenowsky pitched the final two-third innings and recorded one strikeout.
The teams remained scoreless through three innings, when Jake Oester broke the stalemate in the fourth with a two-run double to give Birmingham its first lead, 2-0. On the next at-bat, Hoover native Greg Paiml drove Oester in with an RBI single to move Birmingham further ahead, 3-0. Paiml contributed again in the seventh inning, scoring on an error to extend the Barons’ lead to 4-0.
Jackson’s lone score came in the top of the ninth to reach the 4-1 final.
Paiml led the Barons offensively, going 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Oester was 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Jose Martinez, Carlos Sanchez, Brady Shoemaker, Andy Wilkins and Eric Morrison also recorded hits for Birmingham.
Game three of the series will be held today at 7:05 p.m. at Regions Park, with the Barons’ Jacob Petricka (0-1) facing the Generals’ James Paxton (5-3).
