A former Jasper patrol officer was arrested earlier this week in connection with criminal activity being conducted in the city.

Michael Scott Butcher, 29, of Jasper, who reportedly resigned from his position with the Jasper Police Department on Monday, was taken into custody at his residence early Tuesday morning on charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Jasper Police Chief Connie Rowe said the department was made aware of information regarding the possibility of Butcher being involved in some sort of criminal activity and responded accordingly.

“The information was handled in the same manner as we handle this kind of information about anyone else,” Rowe said. “We conducted an investigation and Mr. Butcher, who had been on leave due to a medical issue, tendered his letter of resignation before our investigators could get the warrant for his arrest in hand.”
