The Alabama Surface Mining Commission announced Friday that the public comment period for a proposed mine along the Mulberry Fork of the Black Warrior River has been extended.

An informal public conference was held Thursday at Bevill State Community College’s Sumiton campus concerning the Reed Mineral No. 5 Mine.

Several area citizens asked that the ASMC extend the public comments because key components of the mine’s permit were not available for viewing online.

“Apparently there were serious problems accessing parts of the application online,” said Randall Johnson, director of the Alabama Surface Mining Commission. “We wanted to make sure that everyone had a chance to view the materials.”

Johnson said the public comment period has been extended until Sept. 10.

“This is for written comments only,” he said.

After the comment period is over, the Alabama Surface Mining Commission will have 30 days to decide if the permit for the Reed No. 5 Mine will be issued, denied or modified.
