Misty Ackerman has been making jewelry since she was in high school, and earlier this year, she turned that hobby into a career by opening The Bead Shop in Jasper.

The new business is located in Oak Hill Plaza behind the Jasper Bowling Center off Highway 195. The Bead Shop sells handmade jewelry, beads, jewelry tools and offers jewelry making classes. Ackerman said she felt the business was a good idea because it was unlike any other business in Jasper.

“Jewelry makers in our area were having to go to Birmingham and Tuscaloosa to buy supplies,” Ackerman said. “It just seemed like a good idea to open a store here.”

Ackerman said the good idea has proven to be just that as the store has seen a steady growth in business since its opening in April.

“We’ve done very well so far,” she said. “People are hearing about us and they are coming to the store.”

Along with beads and items to make jewelry, the store also sells items from jewelry makers across Walker County. Ackerman said The Bead Shop currently has eight consigners and are looking for more.

“We want to get the word out that we have handmade jewelry,” she said. “The jewelry makers we have do an outstanding job and create some beautiful pieces.”

The Bead Shop also sells custom jewelry for weddings, proms and pageants. Gift baskets and T-shirts are also available for purchase.

“Within the next two weeks, we will have T-shirts for all the area high school football teams,” she said.

The Bead Shop is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Ackerman said the shop will be closed several Saturdays in September due to selling jewelry at festivals across the area. The business also can be found on Facebook by searching Bead Shop Jasper.
