Jasper Police Capt. Larry Cantrell said Frankie F. McClain Jr., 32, Genia Marie Murray McClain, 33, and Debra Brooks McClain, 54, all of Jasper, were arrested on Aug. 9 and each charged with second-degree theft of property.
“We had received several calls regarding some thefts that had occurred at some of the building supply stores in our area, and we finally caught the culprits,” Cantrell said. “But not before they had taken several thousands of dollars in merchandise, from riding lawn mowers and weed eaters to flowers and washing machines.”
Cantrell said Jasper police had been searching for suspects in the string of thefts, and finally caught a break when a trio of thieves, which turned out to be a mother, son and daughter-in-law, were caught on tape loading a riding lawn mower into a minivan at a local business.
“They apparently began their little enterprise stealing flowers and graduated up from there,” Cantrell said. “We finally caught up to them after they were caught on tape loading up a riding lawn mower.”
Cantrell said the mother and son were seen on the tape loading the lawn mower into the van, and the daughter-in-law casually walked over and picked up a weedeater and loaded it up too.
“We recovered some of the merchandise they had stolen, but not all of it, I’m sure,” Cantrell said. “One of the items we recovered came from a store in Hoover, so who knows where all else they stole from.”
