DOUBLE SPRINGS – What a way to end a losing streak.

Winston County snapped a 15-game skid in a resounding way at Malcolm-Blake Stadium Friday night, beating Winfield 54-0 in the Class 3A, Region 7 opener for both teams. It was the worst loss for Winfield since the Pirates fell to Haleyville 56-0 in 1996.

The Yellow Jackets wasted no time taking control of the game, lighting up the scoreboard for 34 points in the first half and cruising to the win over the final two quarters.

“We came out and got on them early,” first year Winston County coach Wes Tidwell said of his first victory. “We played really well. We scored basically every time we had the ball and on defense we held them to one first down in the first half.”

The offensive attack was led by quarterback Seth Blanton and running back Hunter Blackwood. Blanton threw for 250 yards while Blackwood topped the 100-yard mark.

“We had several kids that had good nights. The best thing to me was that we came out in the second half and didn’t let up. We put them away early in the third quarter. Our young guys played the last quarter and a half,” Tidwell added. “This means a lot for us. The main thing is that this is a region game and we want to make the playoffs. This is the first step toward doing that.”

Winston County’s last winning game was in Week 7 of the 2010 season. The Yellow Jackets finished 0-10 last season. Friday’s win ended a five-game losing streak to the Pirates. Winston County’s last win in the series came in 2002.

Winston County (1-1, 1-0), which dropped its opener to Lynn, heads to Good Hope (2-0, 1-0) to face the Red Raiders next week.
