Officials with the Walker County Animal Shelter say the group will have a new location at the Jasper Mall on Saturday.

For several months, owners of the mall had allowed the shelter to display animals at the former Sneaky Pete’s location in the food court.

The locally owned coffee shop, Coffee Ninja, is now open at the site, and the staff of the Walker County Animal Shelter is preparing to move alongside K-Mart.

Jennifer Bidwell, temporary manager for the shelter, said the new area will hold about the same number of animals as the original mall location.

Bidwell said the mall site has been a great supplement to the shelter’s headquarters in downtown Jasper.

“(At the mall) they can come in, sit down and play and interact with the animals,” she said.

Volunteers with the animal shelter have been working to renovate the group’s headquarters in Jasper, and Bidwell said they plan on having an open house soon.

She also said the shelter’s fundraising program The Festival of Trees has started. Participants in the project pay $25 to purchase and decorate a Christmas Tree, which will be displayed at the shelter’s site at the mall. Local residents will also vote on the best tree. Individuals and groups can also purchase wreaths for $10.

Bidwell said the shelter is always in need of volunteers and donations of any kind.
