B&T Shavings Inc., a subsidiary of Jasper Lumber, is the producer of Greentree Shavings. The company is also a good steward of the earth by planting more trees than it harvests.
Roy Beall, the company’s chief operating officer, said B&T Shavings Inc. began branding its own custom bedding products in April.
“We’ve been bagging pine shaving products for several years now, but decided to start promoting our own brand earlier this year,” Beall said. “Greentree is made exclusively right here in Walker County, but our customer base is growing daily. We ship to dealers, distributors and farms all throughout the United States, and we also sell right off our docks by the pallets.”
Beall said, because many horse owners have a wide range of needs and preference when it comes to bedding products, Greentree Shavings is customized in four different sizes to fit most of those needs.
“Our Premium Blend is a large flake which is engineered to be the softest under hoof and lowest in dust. It’s perfect for weekend shows. Our Select Blend is a medium particle with the best attributes of our small and large flake products, which picks extremely well while maintaining cushion,” Beall said. “The Easy Pick is the smallest and most absorbant, which allows it to clump at a higher rate. And our longest lasting product is our Pellets, which is our Easy Pick material packed into dense pellets.”
Beall said Greentree bedding is also free from mold and other materials that could be harmful to horses and other livestock.
“We work hard to engineer the highest quality shavings. All of our bedding material is shaved from pine trees procured specifically for this purpose,” Beall said. “Then we triple screen our shavings to remove virtually all airborne dust, before drying it to insure the product remains free of mold once its bagged.”
Greentree bedding products are made from pine timber, but before a single tree is harvested, Beall said every effort is made to ensure the forest stays as healthy as the day they began, if not healthier.
“While most bedding companies claim to be green, we let our practices speak for themselves,” Beall said. “We are the only pine bedding company that I’m aware of that has both the Sustainable Forestry Initiative and Forestry Stewardship Council certifications.”
When consumers see the SFI label on Greentree products, they can be confident they are buying a wood by-product made by a certified source in Walker County that promotes responsible forest management on all forest lands in North America.
