Winston County is now a perfect 3-0 in region play.
The Jackets were outgained by the Hawks 347-315 in total yards, but it was the Jackets who made the plays in the end to preserve the win.
Both teams were solid in the first half on defense, but a pesky Danville group went into halftime up 7-6 following a 66 yard scoring drive in the closing minutes of the first half.
After Winston County’s defense stifled the Hawk’s opening drive, the Jackets struck paydirt with 6:27 left in the third quarter of play. Quarterback Seth Blanton hit a wide open Dylan Earnest on a 34 yard touchdown strike. The conversion attempt failed and the Jackets led 12-7.
Blanton on the night for the Yellow Jackets finished with 196 yards through the air with three touchdowns and an interception.
It didn’t take long for the Hawks to answer the Jackets’ score. The Hawks’ Justin Morgan would cap off a 61-yard drive with an eight yard touchdown run. The conversion attempt failed and the Hawks led 13-12.
The Yellow Jackets (3-1; 3-0) would take the lead back with 9:30 left in the game with a 20 yard touchdown run by Edward Lamp.
The conversion attempt was good and the Jackets led 20-13.
The Jacket defense again rose to the occasion and shut down another Danville drive.
Winston County special teams would strike with 7:36 left in the game when Dylan Earnest received the punt, broke two tackles, and scampered in from 67 yards out for the score. The extra point was good and the Jackets led 27-13.
Earnest had a big night for the Yellow Jackets. He finished the night with 167 all purpose yards, which included four catches for 67 yards and a touchdown to go along with the punt return for the touchdown.
The Hawks would cut it close again with another touchdown run by Morgan. The extra point was good to close within 27-20.
But the Jackets would tack on their final points of the night with 1:59 left in the game. Blanton hit Austin Lewis on an 18-yard catch and run for a touchdown. Lewis also finished with a big night for the Jackets as he had three catches for 63 yards.
Cody Henderson had three catches for 54 yards and a score.
Defensively for the Yellow Jackets, Tyler Linzer recorded 12 tackles in the win. Two of those tackles were for loss.
Winston County, which has already matched the win total over the last two years, is at home next week as they face off against Carbon Hill in a non-region game.
