The kickoff for Monday’s junior varsity football game between Sumiton Christian and Fultondale High School was delayed by a cow that found its way onto the field.

The small brown cow had reportedly been seen at other locations in Sumiton earlier in the day and apparently wandered onto the field before the game.

Sumiton police responded and assisted with corralling the cow. Sumiton officials said every attempt would be made to return the cow to its owner.

“It’s really not that uncommon for a cow to get out and for us to have to herd it,” Sumiton Police Chief T.J. Burnett said early Tuesday. “I just don’t know who it would belong to by it being where it was.”

The animal was not hurt, nor were any of the participants or spectators at the game.

Once a trailer was brought in and the cow was loaded and removed, the teams were able to retake the field and proceed with the game after approximately a half-hour delay.
