The final tally was 365 votes, or 64 percent, for Gilbert and 204, or 36 percent, for Scott.
Gilbert said that he was overwhelmed by the number of people who went to the polls once again to show their support for his vision for Cordova’s future.
“I think people were voting for an idea, for a state of mind and not necessarily just a person. I think they understand that a whole new way of thinking comes with me taking office,” Gilbert said.
At 25, Gilbert will be among the youngest mayors in the state.
Gilbert said he is proud to be part of a broader movement of young adults stepping forward to enact changes in their communities and in their country.
“We’re going to see some awesome things happening in Cordova, and it’s not all going to be me. It’s going to be the people who are working for us now and in the future,” Gilbert said.
When Gilbert takes office in a few weeks, his first priorities will be continuing the progress that has been made toward construction of a grocery store and downtown demolition.
In doing so, he also hopes to see an attitude change within the city.
“Why can’t we have everything we have ever wanted here in Cordova? There is no reason we can’t. It’s just going to take turning over that leaf and putting some people in the right places so that vision is all throughout the city of Cordova,” Gilbert said.
When contacted for comment Tuesday night, Scott congratulated Gilbert on his victory.
In District 5, Stephen Tidwell unseated incumbent Paul Lawson on Tuesday. Tidwell received 54 votes to Lawson’s 35.
McBee wins in Parrish council runoff
Alice McBee will now be the District 2 representative on the Parrish Town Council after winning Tuesday’s runoff over William Banks.
McBee finished with 31 votes, while Banks totalled 22. Voting was held at Parrish High School. While the turnout for the runoff was low, both candidates increased their votes from the regular election when McBee had 24 and Banks had 16.
“The turnout wasn’t great, but it was about what we expected,” said Marcy Brown, Parrish’s town clerk.
