Curry girls beat Walker for area crown

For one set Tuesday, Walker looked like the team to challenge Curry for the area championship.

Then the Yellow Jackets took control.

Curry won three straight sets after dropping the opener and earned the area title in the process, beating Walker 24-26, 25-19, 25-23, 25-8 at Walker’s Songer Gym Tuesday night.

Curry hosts the area tournament next week. Walker closes out area play at home against Hayden on Thursday.

The fifth-ranked Yellow Jackets improved to 41-10 on the season.

Curry got a balanced attack across the board against Walker. Jesse Bagwell had 36 assists, 10 digs, three kills, two blocks and two aces, Bretta Lane had 10 kills and four blocks, Chloe Bennett had 12 kills, three digs and a block, Josie Walker had 11 kills, two digs and a block and Mary Beth Scott had five kills, two blocks and two digs.

Holli McGinnis had 20 digs, one kill, one assist and one ace. Englebert had four kills, three digs and two blocks, Jordan McPherson had 13 digs and one assist, Kendall Chance had nine digs and two aces and Payton Norris had 10 digs.

For Walker, JoLee Dobbs had 32 assists and five digs, Miranda Bruce had 19 kills, Jessica Woodley had 10 kills and 15 digs, Sidney Cooper had 10 kills and Anna Claire Harris had eight digs, three kills and three blocks.

The Vikings (23-13) host Lynn and Hayden beginning at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Winston County knocked off both Walker and Curry on Tuesday. Winston County beat the Yellow Jackets 25-20, 25-19.

For Curry, Bagwell had 23 assists in the loss, Scott had eight kills, Bennett had seven kills, McGinnis added seven digs, Chance had 11 digs and Norris added 13 digs.

Winston County defeated Walker 21-25, 25-23, 15-13. For the Vikings, Dobbs had 23 assists and three aces, Bruce had 11 kills, Cooper had eight kills, nine digs and three aces and Woodley had six kills and five digs.

Dora wins pair at Brilliant

Dora picked up a pair of wins at Brilliant on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs opened with a three-set win over Marion County, which is ranked No. 6 in Class 1A. Dora won the match 25-10, 21-25, 15-9.

For the Bulldogs (22-18), Jordan Reese had seven kills, Raine Barnes had three kills, Carrie Weldon had 12 digs and two aces, Hannah Wilson had 13 assists, Shelicia Meadows added 13 digs and Lydia Sanders had 10 digs.

Dora followed with a 25-19, 25-18 victory over Brilliant.

For the Bulldogs, Alexia Smith had 10 kills and two aces, Reese had five kills and two aces, Larissa Steeley had four kills, Hannah Wilson had 17 assists, Sanders and Lindsey Johnson each pitched in with nine digs, Weldon had eight digs and Madisen Bencko had three aces.

Dora plays in the area tournament next Thursday at Carbon Hill.

The top two teams from the area tournament advance to the Super Regional Tournament.

Cordova sweeps Parrish

Cordova made quick work of the Tornadoes on Tuesday at Parrish High School.

The Blue Devils picked up a straight-set 25-6, 25-5, 25-7 victory.

For Cordova, which is 33-18, got 19 kills from Faith Sims, Sydnie Hitchcock had six kills, Emmy Perrin had five kills, Emily Wilson had 16 assists and Tiffany Colburn had 11 assists.

Cordova will play Parrish on Senior Night at Cordova High School beginning at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Hitchcock and Colburn are seniors on this year’s squad.

Cordova will play in the area tournament beginning at 6 p.m. next Thursday at Winston County High School.

Cordova is coming off a second-place finish in the Haleyville Tournament on Saturday.

The Blue Devils knocked off Cherokee 25-19, 25-14, lost to Hatton 25-22, 25-19, beat Brooks 25-16, 25-21 and defeated Haleyville 25-18, 14-25, 15-11 to advance to the championship match.

Against Haleyville, Sims had 13 kills and Wilson had 14 assists and five digs.

In the championship match, Hatton defeated Cordova 23-25, 25-23, 15-9.

For Cordova, Sims had 10 kills, Wilson had 11 assists and 11 digs, Malea Gilmore had seven digs and Hitchcock had seven digs and five kills.
