Thanks to Chloe Bennett and company the Yellow Jackets accomplished their goal, rolling to the Class 5A, Area 12 Tournament championship, sweeping both Hayden and Walker to earn a spot at the North Super Regional Tournament next week in Huntsville.
“Our girls were excited. They knew this was the last time they were going to play at home and they wanted to go out with a win,” Curry coach Annah Cagle said.
Next up for Curry is a match against Muscle Shoals set for 12:45 p.m. Friday at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville. Walker opens the tournament against Lawrence County at 10:15 a.m. Friday. The top four teams from the Super Regional Tournament advance to the Elite Eight State Tournament set for Oct. 31-Nov. 1 in Birmingham.
In the championship match against Walker on Thursday, Curry ran through the first two sets and rallied for a third set win for the 25-14, 25-13, 26-24 victory.
Bennett, one of six seniors on this year’s squad, finished with a team-high 19 kills against the Vikings, including the game-winner in the third set.
Curry took over each of the first two sets at the midway point.
In the opening set, Curry held a slim 9-7 advantage before putting together an 11-2 run behind the serve of Jessie Bagwell that made the score 20-9.
The second set went the same way with Curry taking a 10-8 lead and putting together a run behind Bagwell’s serve for a 15-11 advantage. Walker didn’t get closer than five points the rest of the way.
The third set was a back-and-forth battle with neither team leading by more than three points. Walker moved within a point of forcing a fourth set after a block put the Vikings ahead 24-23, but Curry got back-to-back kills from Bennett to earn the win — the Yellow Jackets’ third over Walker this season.
For Curry, Bagwell had 32 assists, four digs, one kill and two aces, Josie Walker had five kills and two digs, Bretta Lane added six kills and two blocks, Mary Beth Scott had eight kills, seven digs and two aces, Holly McGinnis had six digs, Kendall Chance had 16 digs and Payton Norris added 10 digs.
Curry (45-11), ranked No. 5 in Class 5A, opened the day with a 25-7, 25-14, 25-13 win over Hayden.
Bennett again led the way with 14 kills. Bagwell had 27 assists and eight digs. Lane had seven kills, Scott had five kills, Chance added nine digs and 10 aces. Norris had 16 digs.
The North Central Regional Tournament will be held Friday and Saturday with the championship match set for 6 p.m.
Class 4A, Area 8 Tournament
Carbon Hill is heading to Montgomery.
The Bulldogs won the 4A, Area 8 Tournament on Thursday, taking down Dora in the championship match, 25-22, 25-14, 23-25, 25-19 at Carbon Hill High School.
Carbon Hill takes on St. James at 4:15 p.m. next Friday in the South Super Regional Tournament in Montgomery’s Multiplex at Cramton Bowl.
Maggi Clark had a big day for Carbon Hill registering 22 kills. Against Dora, she had 15 kills and three digs, Meagan Bice added nine kills and eight digs, Savanna Lawson had eight kills and four blocks, Kendall Norris had 14 digs and Emily Posten had 30 assists and six digs.
Carbon Hill opened with a 25-17, 25-18, 25-17 win over Oak Grove.
Clark had seven kills, five digs and five aces for Carbon Hill, Edmonds had three kills, three digs and two aces, Lawson added five kills, Bice had five kills and three digs, Norris had 15 digs and three aces and Posten added 18 assists and seven digs.
Dora will join Carbon Hill at Montgomery.
In the loss to Carbon Hill, Dora’s Jordan Reese had eight kills and three blocks, Alexia Smith had six kills and four blocks, Madisen Bencko and Larissa Steeley had three kills each, Hannah Wilson had 13 assists and three aces, Lydia Sanders had 19 digs, Carrie Weldon had 15 digs and Lindsey Johnson added 13 digs.
Dora (23-19) opened with a 25-17, 23-25, 25-23, 25-15 win over Corner. Smith had 14 kills and eight digs, Reese had 10 kills, Steeley added seven kills and Wilson had 31 assists and nine digs.
Dora faces Alabama Christian at 6:45 p.m. on Friday in the South Super Regional Tournament.
Class 3A, Area 14 Tournament
Cordova placed second to Winston County in the 3A, Area 14 Tournament at Double Springs on Thursday.
Cordova takes on Piedmont at 11:30 a.m. Friday in the North Super Regional Tournament.
The Blue Devils opened with a straight-set win over Winfield before falling to Winston County.
Against Winfield, Cordova (36-19) won 25-15, 25-11, 25-20. Faith Sims had 18 kills and six aces, Sydnie Hitchcock had seven kills, Emily Wilson added 18 assists, Tiffany Colburn had 17 assists and 12 digs and Stevi Lyn Drummond had nine aces.
Winston County knocked off Cordova 25-15, 25-16, 25-22.
For Cordova, Sims had eight kills, Hitchcock had six kills, Wilson added 11 assists and 12 digs and Colburn had eight assists.
Other scores from Thursday
Top-ranked Addison (50-4) claimed the Class 1A, Area 11 title, routing Meek 25-6, 25-10, 25-15.
Addison will play at 10:15 a.m. in the North Super Regional Tournament in Huntsville next Friday. Meek plays at 12:45 p.m.
Oakman placed second in the 2A, Area 11 Tournament, losing to Cold Springs 25-21, 25-20, 25-17 in the championship match.
The Wildcats play Lexington at 6:45 p.m. next Friday in Huntsville.
