A truck crashed into a section of Maddox Middle School Thursday morning just before the start of classes.

The truck was northbound on 3rd Avenue in Jasper and left the roadway, hitting a power pole before careening into the school, according to Sgt. David Mize of the Jasper Police Department. Mize said he was working traffic in a different area of the school when the crash happened around 7:45 a.m.

Mize said the truck was occupied by a mother and child. He said the two suffered minor injuries.

“This could have been much more serious,” Mize said. “It’s a good thing there were no kids in the area when the crash happened.”

Maddox Principal Patsy Stricklin said the section of the school hit in the incident was its band room. She said no children were in the room when the crash occurred and students were not allowed in the room at all Thursday.

“The damage doesn’t look that bad, but we want to always be safe,” she said.

Stricklin said an architect was scheduled to visit the school Thursday evening to assess the damage.

“I expect students will be allowed back in there in the morning,” she said Thursday afternoon.

Mize said the cause of the crash is under investigation. He said there will be no charges filed, because there was no evidence that drugs or alcohol had anything to do with the incident.

Stricklin said the child in the vehicle was a student at Maddox. She said the mother, who was driving the truck, told her she heard a pop and lost control of the vehicle.

“We’re thankful no one was seriously injured,” Stricklin said.
