Hamilton claims region title with win over Winston County

DOUBLE SPRINGS — Winston County stuck with Hamilton for a half, but the Aggies pulled away over the final two quarters, earning a 46-27 shootout win over the Yellow Jackets at Malcolm-Blake Stadium Friday night.

The win clinched the Class 3A, Region 7 championship for Hamilton, the Aggies’ fourth region title in the last five years.

Cody Henderson started the scoring for Winston County, scoring on a 62-yard run with 7:22 left in the opening quarter for a 7-0 lead.

Hamilton’s Garrett May scored the Aggies’ first two touchdowns, going in from four yards out and nine yards out for a 14-7 lead with 11:54 left in the second quarter.

Winston County (8-0, 6-0) struck back with quarterback Seth Blanton connecting with Henderson on a 19-yard touchdown pass to notch the score at 14-14. Hamilton regained the lead on a Quinton May 5-yard touchdown run with 2:13 left in the first half.

The Aggies weren’t done scoring in the half.

At the 36-second mark, Garrett May returned an interception 65 yards for a score and a 27-14 lead.

Winston County countered just before the half ended with Blanton hitting Austin Lewis on a 56-yard touchdown on the final play of the half to cut the Aggies’ lead to 27-21.

Hamilton pulled away in the third quarter, getting a 2-yard touchdown run from Garrett May and a 22-yard score from Mitch Stults for a 40-21 advantage.

Logan Rogers’ added Hamilton’s last score and Winston County got one last score on an Edward Lamp 4-yard run with 17 seconds remaining in the game.

For Hamilton, Garrett May had 11 rushes for 25 yards and three scores, Quinton May added 10 attempts for 98 yards and a score.

For Winston County, Blanton completed 18 of 37 passes for 260 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Winston County (5-3, 4-2) plays at Vinemont next week.
