ADDISON — The Addison Bulldogs can head into their off week in a celebratory mood thanks to Friday night’s 20-12 victory over the previously undefeated Falkville Blue Devils at A.G. Hicks Stadium in Addison.

With the win, Addison has clinched home field advantage for the first round of the playoffs, as well as continued their winning streak — which now stands at six games. The formula for success in the contest against the Blue Devils was one that has helped the Bulldogs turn their season around from an 0-2 start and has been a trademark for the program for decades: a tough rushing attack and a stingy defense.

Addison’s defense would hold Falkville to 187 yards on the night and create havoc in the Blue Devil backfield, sacking quarterback Caleb Estes 6 times and recording 13 tackles for a loss as a team. Caleb Estill and Jake Wade led the Bulldog defense, each recording 8 tackles — with Estill racking up two sacks and three tackles for a loss, while Wade had two tackles for a loss and recovered a fumble.

The Bulldogs ground game rolled up 181 yards in the contest, with Dustin Bladow carrying the ball 14 times for 87 yards.

Addison coach David Smothers expressed his pride in his team’s ability to overcome a halftime deficit, as well as their hard work in bouncing back from the early-season defeats.

“Falkville really came out in the first half and gave us all we could handle — but I told our players at halftime that the game was still in our hands, we just had to go out and earn it. We felt that if we kept plugging away with our run game and stiffened up on defense, we could not only take the lead but come away with a victory. Our team responded very well in the second half and I’m very pleased how everyone came together.”

Following an early score in the opening quarter of the game to give Falkville a 6-0 advantage, Addison put together an 11-play, 62-yard drive, with Wade scoring on a two-yard run. With the extra point kick block, the contest was tied at 6-6.

The Blue Devils would retake the lead midway through the second quarter on a 63-yard, 11-play drive to go up 12-6 going into halftime following an unsuccessful two-point conversion.

It would be the last points of the night for Falkville as Addison would score 14 unanswered points, while holding the Blue Devils to just 70 yards in the second half. The Bulldogs were also impressive in shutting down the Falkville running game in the final half, holding the Blue Devils to -30 yards rushing.

Penalties and the relentless Addison defense would force Falkville into a fourth and 40 on their opening possession, with Bladow returning the punt to the Blue Devil 20 yard line. Four plays later, Seth Robinson would take the ball into the end zone from five-yards out to allow Addison to grab a 13-12 lead following Estill good extra point kick.

Early in the fourth quarter, Addison’s Levi Tyree would intercept an Estes pass, leading to a 5-play, 61-yard drive as Robinson scored his second touchdown of the night on a five yard run. Estill connected on the extra point to give the Bulldogs the 20-12 win.

Addison (6-2, 6-1) has wrapped up Class 1A, Region 6 play and will host in-county rival Winston County on Nov. 2.
