Fitness centers from Jasper and surrounding areas are joining together for the second annual “Party in Pink.”

The event is scheduled for Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Clem Gym on the Bevill State Community College campus in Jasper.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Student tickets for ages 12-18 are available for $10. Donations are also accepted.

Proceeds will be donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.

"We hope to raise breast cancer awareness by shouting it out with the power of pink," said Maria Ross of Athletic Arts Center and Sharon Hogg of Target Fitness.

Ross and Hogg are organizing the event along with Bevill State Community College SGA.

Fifteen other licensed Zumba instructors from Cornerstone Gym in Sumiton, ZFit, Fitness Factory and Solid Image in Jasper and Studio 460 in Winfield are also participating.

Among them is Leonard Rigsby, who is currently the only male Zumba instructor in Walker County.

Rigsby, a chaplain, started taking Zumba classes at Fitness Factory in March with his wife, Becky. They were looking for something different to do and tried Zumba on a whim.

“After the first class, we were hooked," Rigsby said. “After much prayer and consideration to my other calling, I decided to jump in and get certified to become a Zumba instructor. I’m looking forward to helping others add fitness to their life.”

Rigsby added that he struggled with being the only male Zumba instructor in the area until he learned that the founder of Zumba, Beto Perez, was a man.

“In my work as a chaplain, I've seen the distress and trouble that cancer has brought to many families in our area. I'm excited about Party in Pink because if my participation can bring awareness of breast cancer to just one individual, that would be the greatest thing!” he said.

A Party in Pink Zumbathon charity event is a Zumba Fitness-Party that is open to the public and raises funds and awareness to help end breast cancer worldwide. These events are hosted by licensed Zumba Instructors who have been granted approval by Zumba Fitness, LLC.

“We'd love to have you moving to the beat for a song or two, but, if you are uncomfortable doing so, just sit back and watch the show. However, we'll warn you, it's hard to keep still with all the energy permeating around you,” Ross and Hogg said.
