A total of 28,736 voters cast their ballots in Walker County on Tuesday, compared to 28,891 for the 2008 presidential election (then a 14-year record) and 28,850 for the 2004 election.
There were 46,320 registered voters for this election, up from 44,357 for the 2008 election.
Allison said there are 90 provisional ballots that must be ruled on by the county canvassing board on Tuesday.
Most of the races were won by a wide enough margin to not be affected by the number of provisional ballots. However, in the campaign for the Walker County Commission’s District 2 seat, Democrat Dan Wright received only 14 more votes than Republican candidate Davey Reed.
Since Allison was a candidate in Tuesday’s election, Chief Clerk Rita Taft served as acting probate judge in regard to election duties. Those responsibilities included appointing poll workers and overseeing the election returns at the Community Health Systems Activities Center in Jasper.
Taft said that aside from the returns from one polling place being a little late, the election had no problems.
“I thought everything went really well,” she said.
Allison said election officials did have to deal with the typical amount of write-in candidates, which always slows down the returns.
