Organizers of the 11th annual Pets on Parade are hoping residents will turn out to help benefit a program to provide spay and neuter services in the area.

The Pets on Parade celebration, which is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce of Walker County Junior Ambassadors, serves as the primary fundraiser for the Walker County Humane Society’s spay and neuter program.

Though the group relinquished control of its animal shelter to the county, the organization still provides many services to the community. Those services include investigating animal abuse, providing foster care for animals and assisting owners with lost or found situations.

All of money raised at Pets on Parade, however, goes to the Humane Society’s spay and neuter program.

Susie Vann, a member of the society’s board of directors, said the program has allowed volunteers to spay or neuter more than 100 animals since April.

“Even if they raise $500, that’s five more animals that can be spayed or neutered,” Vann said.

Pets on Parade will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at Gamble Park in Jasper. Residents may enter their pets to win one of the following categories: cutest, best dressed, best trained, best looking, most unusual and owner look alike.

The entry fee is $5 per category.

Chamber President Linda Lewis said the Junior Ambassadors are always happy to help further the Humane Society’s cause, and this year’s group is no exception.

Vann said that 70,000 kittens and puppies are born everyday, and every year 4 million pets are placed in shelters and then euthanized.
