MADISON — Madison Academy looks like it wants a return trip to the Class 3A championship game, as the Mustangs opened the 2012 postseason with a 58-19 victory over Winston County.

"Our effort was real good," said Madison Academy head coach Eric Cohu. "We did really well offensively. We were hoping for the shutout but it didn't happen. A lot of guys contributed tonight. That's what happened."

After stopping the Yellow Jackets on their first possession, Madison Academy needed only one play to get in the end zone. Following a 44-yard punt return by Nick Haas to the 4-yard line, Malik Miller scored on the Mustangs first play from scrimmage. Chandler Trach's PAT made it 7-0.

On the Mustangs' next possession, quarterback Blake Coward connected with Haas on a 32-yard touchdown reception. Trach booted a 37-yard field goal on the second play of the second quarter to give Madison Academy a 17-0 lead.

With 7:30 remaining in the first half, Kerryon Johnson raced 43 yards for a touchdown. The PAT lifted the lead to 24-0.

Winston County replied with an 82-yard touchdown pass from Seth Blanton to Cody Henderson. The PAT was good to make the score 24-7.

LeMarcus Martin scored on a 40-yard scamper and Haas scored later in the second quarter giving the Mustangs a 37-7 halftime lead. Miller and Johnson scored their second touchdowns each in the third quarter for Madison Academy. Logan Hamlett added on a 1-yard run early in the fourth quarter.

Winston County's second half scores came on a Cole Haygood touchdown reception on the first possession of the fourth quarter and another touchdown reception by Austin Lewis, both from Blanton.

Winston County closed the season at 5-6, losing its last five games.
