Council OKs website, branding campaign

CORDOVA — The new Cordova City Council is continuing its quest for better communication with the public by establishing a website.

The council accepted a three-year agreement Tuesday night with Birmingham-based Pinnex Group for the website, a first for the city.

Recovery updates are posted on a blog and Facebook page titled “The Cordova Conversation,” but it is not focused on the city as a whole.

“At this time and place where Cordova is, I feel that it is very important to keep the public updated at all times – everything we have going on, every event, every decision made. A website is the only way to do that effectively,” Mayor Drew Gilbert said.

Gilbert said Pinnex Group will upload the initial content provided by the city. Further updates will be handled by local administrators, who will most likely be department heads.

Gilbert said the start-up cost is $3,500 with an additional monthly fee of $75. The Walker Area Community Foundation has agreed to provide a grant for the start-up cost and first year of fees.

The council also adopted a branding campaign that was developed by design students from Auburn University earlier this year.

The new logo is the top half of the word “Cordova” with the slogan “Building back better, safer, greener” written underneath.

It will appear on council agendas, official letterhead, city vehicles and future downtown offices.

“This doesn’t even cost us any money. It’s just something to provide a unified vision moving forward,” Gilbert said.

In other action, the council:

•Entered into an agreement with Smith & Associates for a GPS survey of downtown. Gilbert said the unusual layout of the district could pose problems once demolition is completed.

“We fear that it’s going to be a bit chaotic. Once the buildings are down, whose land ends where?” he said.

Gilbert said that the quote from the surveyor is no more than $1,800 to establish the boundaries of every lot on Main Street.

•Agreed to deed some city property to the Cordova Economic Development Authority, formerly known as the Cordova Industrial Development Board. The land will be used in the construction of a proposed new grocery store. The Economic Development Authority has applied for a grant to fund the project and will lease the building to a grocer.

•Promoted assistant city clerk and court clerk magistrate Leanne Dawkins to city clerk/treasurer. Longtime city clerk Elaine Stewart will now serve as assistant city clerk/treasurer.

•Conducted a public hearing and gave its approval for a Masonic Lodge to be constructed at 108 Church Street. The previous lodge was located on the second floor of City Hall, which was destroyed in the April 2011 tornadoes.The council also accepted a definition of Masonic Lodge to be added to the city’s zoning ordinance. The issue was addressed by the previous council but had to be revisited because a quorum was not present for that meeting.
