Smith has served as the police chief in Parrish for the past eight years.
“He’s got a lot of excellent programs going in Parrish. Any of you who saw Parrish before he was chief of police there probably know the things he has put into place. I feel very comfortable making the recommendation to this council to hire Nick,” Mayor Drew Gilbert said.
Smith’s appointment was approved by a vote of 5-1. Stephen Tidwell voted against the motion. Warren Branch and Lauren Vance were absent.
Smith addressed the crowd prior to the vote and said he was excited about the opportunity in front of him.
“When Mayor Gilbert called and asked if I would be interested, he really excited me with his energy and what he said about his council. He said he wanted me to be a part of Cordova and do what I can to move Cordova forward,” Smith said.
Smith will be paid a salary of $40,000 a year. Gilbert said Kenneth Bobo, the former Cordova chief who is now serving as police chief in Carbon Hill, was making $37,000.
“In giving a cost of living adjustment to the role, that was the round number that I came up with,” Gilbert said.
