Shirley Bell Gregg Smith, 81, passed peacefully into her eternal rest on Thursday, Nov, 29, 2012. The only child of Karl and Lois Bell of Charleston, S.C., Shirley grew up in a family of well known musicians. Her mother and her aunt, Clo McAlpin, were popular organists known for radio and movie performances across the country.

She is survived by her two sons, Edward P. Gregg, Jr. and his wife, Jeanie, and their son, Peyton, and daughter, Alexandra, all of Jasper, and Randall Gregg of Atlanta, Ga. She is survived by three children of her late husband, Walter Sumpter Smith Jr.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward P. Gregg; and granddaughter, Natalee Carrington Gregg.

A graduate of Birmingham Southern College, Shirley was involved in local theatre and television and was a popular model in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. She was a member of the DOC, DAR and Kappa Delta sorority. As the administrative associate for the UAB Alumni Association for 20 years, she was well-known among its members. Shirley greatly enjoyed traveling the world with friends and family and always had amusing adventures to share. She had a dauntless spirit and will be missed.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at 1 p.m., at Johns-Ridout’s Funeral Parlors with burial following at Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m.
